Bar Hopping Through Bustling St. Thomas
St. Thomas is a secluded slice of Caribbean paradise with a rich colonial history. Established in the 1600s as a bustling port for traders in the sugarcane industry and pirates alike, today the island is a thriving commercial port and popular stopover for luxury cruise ships visiting the US Virgin Islands. The island is divided into three distinct parts: The lively port and downtown area of Charlotte Amalie, the East End with resorts and quiet beaches and the North Coast and Magens Bay, one of the world’s most beautiful beaches.
This 31-square mile (83-sq-km) island is a secluded home to just 51,000 residents, making it a popular place for tourists to come sail, snorkel and sip on exotic cocktails after sundown. Of all the US Virgin Islands, St. Thomas has the best nightlife. There are hundreds of beach bars, nightclubs and restaurants to suit everyone’s tastes. Here’s a guide to the neighborhoods and the local hot spots scattered around the island.
After sundown the downtown area lights up with bars and restaurants. Tourists can find live bands, karaoke bars, jazz clubs, beer gardens and local DJs spinning the latest hits until the wee hours of the morning. You’ll find great views of the harbor and amazing tropical drinks. Though all the bars and restaurants are close to each other, it’s a good idea to exercise caution at night once you leave the popular waterfront area.
By day, harbor-side Havensight is the shopper’s paradise of the US Virgin Islands with hundreds of stores in the outdoor malls. After a long day of shopping, visitors can relax and unwind while enjoying live rock and roll concerts and standup comedy. There’s fun and good vibes all around in this part of town.
This small neighborhood is located just west of Charlotte Amalie. It’s filled with bright, charming homes and trendy restaurants. In the evening, visitors flock to enjoy everything from hip wine bars and brick-oven pizzerias to slot machines and pool. When you’re well wined and dined, head over to the nightclubs and dance all night to popular hits, reggaeton and hip hop music.
On the southeast end of the island, you can feel the pulse of energy after sundown. This energetic neighborhood is a favorite amongst locals and visitors. Everything is in walking distance from each other so you can hop from open-air pubs to sports bar to pool halls. Listen for calypso singers and steel drum players at different bars. There’s plenty of entertainment to go around, and you might even see dancing on the tables. Be adventurous and party your heart out until morning. After all, this is the US Virgin Islands.
